Why there is a sanctuary in La Escobilla

  • It’s a natural nesting beach La Escobilla is one of the few beaches on the planet where thousands of olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) arrive at the same time to lay their eggs. This phenomenon is called “arribada” (arrival) and occurs only in very few places in the world (Mexico, Costa Rica, India, and Africa).
  • Perfect conditions:  Its soft sand, warm temperature, and moderate waves create the ideal environment for the turtles to bury their eggs and for the hatchlings to emerge into the sea.
  • Environmental protection: For years, La Escobilla has been a Wildlife Sanctuary protected by CONANP (National Commission of Natural Protected Areas). Biologists, local communities, and ecotourists work there to care for the nests, release hatchlings, and educate visitors.
  • Ecological and tourism impact: Thanks to this sanctuary, thousands of turtles are able to reproduce each year, helping to conserve the species.
